About this shirt
This exceptionally engineered piece represents one of the most innovative and memorable design concepts of the early 2000s. Created to mark 100 years since Newton Heath reformed as Manchester United in 1902, this fully reversible shirt serves as both the club's away and third kit for the 2001-02 season. Side one features a pristine white mesh base framed by bold black shoulders and elegant gold piping accents. Flipping the shirt inside out reveals side two: a striking, shimmering gold satin-finish body paired with black panels, designed as an explicit homage to the club’s centenary triumph. Both sides carry monochromatic heat-pressed versions of the club crest, the classic Umbro double-diamond branding, and the legendary Vodafone sponsor across the chest, crowned by an embroidered miniature "100" centenary roundel above the badge.
The story behind the shirt
2001/02 in context
The story behind the shirt The 2001-02 campaign was a historic milestone marking 100 years of the Manchester United moniker. Sir Alex Ferguson’s side wore this iconic reversible kit during several legendary European and domestic nights, notably utilizing the white mesh side during a stunning 3-2 Champions League comeback victory away against Deportivo La Coruña. This template is instantly synonymous with the lethal debut season of Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who hammered in 36 goals across all competitions, alongside club icons David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, and Juan Sebastián Verón.
